South Korea Cosmetics Exports Surge Past US, Rank 2nd Globally Behind France

South Korea's cosmetics export boom surges ahead in 2025, as K-beauty surpasses the United States to claim the world’s second-largest exporter position, according to recent data from the Korea International Trade Association (KITA). Between January and April, South Korea shipped $3.61 billion worth of beauty products just edging out the US’s $3.57 billion, marking the country's first time overtaking America in this category.

Explosive Growth Keeps Upward Trajectory

South Korea’s cosmetics sector has been growing robustly. In 2024, it exported $10.3 billion, surpassing Germany’s $9.08 billion and securing its place as the third-largest global exporter behind France and the US. During the same year, exports grew a blistering 20.3%, outpacing France's 6.3% and the US's 1.1%.

Monthly Export Surge

This momentum continued into 2025 with monthly export figures rising from $750.8 million in January to $885.9 million in February, $939.9 million in March, and a record $1.03 billion in April .

Expanding Reach into New Markets

K-beauty is penetrating emerging markets across Europe and the Middle East. Between January and May 2025:

  • Poland’s imports surged 121% to $111.8 million, from $50.4 million.

  • UAE imports rose 74% to $99.3 million, up from $57 million.

K-Beauty's Popularity: Culture and Commerce United

South Korea also became the top exporter of cosmetics to the US in 2024, overtaking France with shipments reaching $1.7 billion, versus France’s $1.26 billion, demonstrating K-beauty’s growing dominance in the world’s largest beauty market.

Industry analysts attribute this success to the global popularity of K-pop and K-drama, celebrity endorsements, and savvy product placement—e.g., LED beauty masks and stick balms featured in TV shows—propelling consumer demand worldwide.

Innovation, Investment, & Market Consolidation

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety reports that South Korea produced ₩17.54 trillion (~US$12.8 billion) in cosmetic goods in 2024, with exports accounting for $10.2 billion, a 20.9% year‑on‑year increase. Skincare remains dominant—making up 58.7% of production (₩10.3 trillion)—while color cosmetics grew 51.4% to ₩2.68 trillion, led by lip products.

Major global players are taking notice: L’Oréal acquired South Korea’s Dr.G in late 2024, targeting K-beauty's skincare innovation. The sector also recorded 18 M&A deals totaling $1.6 billion in 2024, as investors eye growth opportunities.

U.S. Market Expansion & Japan Dominance

Despite proposed US tariffs of up to 25%, Korean beauty startups remain confident. Brands like Tirtir, d’Alba, Torriden, and Beauty of Joseon are in talks with retail giants like Ulta, Sephora, Target, and Costco to launch physical outlets in the US.

K-beauty now constitutes around 22% of imported cosmetics in the US and a remarkable 40% in Japan, reflecting its prominent global footprint.

The Road Ahead

With sustained growth expected, Korea has further institutionalized support: a dedicated Cosmetics Day (Sept 7) and updated regulations to improve standards and combat false marketing. The government also created a $27 million fund to back beauty start-ups.

Meanwhile, brands like COSRX—now part of Amorepacific—continue to thrive overseas. COSRX’s snail essence serum remains a top seller on Amazon and a key U.S. export success.

South Korea’s ascent to the second-largest global cosmetics exporter after France is no accident—it’s proof of K-beauty’s mastery in innovation, branding, and global marketing. With its strengthening presence in emerging markets, escalating foreign investment, and strong momentum in traditional western markets, K-beauty shows no signs of slowing. As it continues to shape global beauty trends, analysts predict further expansion, sustained cross-border retailing, and potential navigation of trade tensions with resilience.
